What is the marine provision?

What is a marine slop chest?

A slop chest is a tiny shop on board a ship where the crew can buy personal items like clothing, toiletries, and other necessities. The purser of the ship, who is in charge of overseeing the ship’s funds and supplies, often operates the slop chest. Due to the higher cost of getting them to the ship, items sold in the slop chest are often more expensive than those that can be bought on land. For the crew, especially on lengthy trips, the slop box is frequently the only source of some supplies.
